NEWSLETTER OF ASSOCIATION SUISSE TURQUIE
JUNE 2016
As UNESCO’s 6th Session of the General Assembly to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage is underway currently in Geneva, we thought it could be useful in this edition to talk about culture and heritage. We often heard the denomination « Unesco World Heritage Site », but what it means for Switzerland and Turkey ? In Switzerland, there are 8 cultural and 3 natural sites and they include the magnanimous Jungfrau, the picturesque vineyard terraces of Lavaux on the coasts of Geneva Lake and the romantic castles of Bellinzona.

Switzerland – UNESCO World Heritage Centre
UNESCO World Heritage Centre … Properties submitted on the Tentative List (1) A Tentative List is an inventory of those properties which each State Party intends to …).
In Turkey, there are currently 13 cultural and 2 Mixed sites which include the white cotton walls of Pamukkale, the most typical Ottoman city of Safranbolu and the impressive Diyarbakır Fortress with its walls, at 5.5km the world’s 2nd longest after the Great wall of China!
(for the full list http://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/tr).
This brief overview just shows how many amazing places there are to see in our countries. We also hope to have given you some inspiration for this year’s summer holidays. In case, however, you cannot make it to all the heritage sites in Turkey, many and more of them can be seen in miniature format at Miniatürk Museum in Istanbul, currently the world’s largest such park.

We wish you all a sunny and happy summer!

40th Session of The World Heritage Committee, July 10-20
Istanbul
This annual meeting which takes place in Istanbul this year, leads to the a selection from the nominated sites for the new “cultural heritage sites” in the world. In this year’s meeting, among the nominees, there is the architectural work and heritage of Swiss architect Le Corbusier and the archeological site of Ani near the city of Kars in Turkey, which was in 10th-11th centuries an Armenian feudal capital and in 11th and 12th centuries a Seljuki center. The site carries important architectural samples from both periods but it is largely in ruins.
