EKİM 2016

NEWSLETTER OF ASSOCIATION SUISSE TURQUIE

EKİM 2016

In this edition, we would like to talk about the Beau-Rivage Palace Hotel which will soon host our association’s annual ball in honour of Turkish Republic Day. Opened in March 1861 as the Beau-Rivage Hotel, it was built in the neoclassical style. However and architecturally, the hotel is more marked by the Palace section, which was completed in 1908 in the neo-baroque style integrating some key elements of Art-Nouveau. The buildings are registered in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property.  Having hosted many illustrious guests from Victor Hugo to Nelson Mandela, the hotel was also a major centre of Coco Chanel’s fashion shows. Today, the hotel is owned by the Swiss Sandoz family, founders of Sandoz AG, now Novartis, the world’s largest pharmaceutical company.

The particular significance of the Beau-Rivage Palace Hotel for Turkish history lies in the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923 in its premises.  The treaty ended four years of Turkish war of independence that had ensued after WWI against the allied forces, resulting in the recognition of Turkish sovereignty and the current Turkish borders.  The night of our gathering will grant us the special occasion to see the archives of the hotel on this historic event.

We look forward to seeing many of you in the beautiful surroundings of the Beau-Rivage Palace Hotel!

With this edition, we are also celebrating the first anniversary of our newsletter and would like to thank you for your positive feedback so far.

An Olympics Review

In this year’s Olympics which took place in Brazil, Switzerland won 7 medals and Turkey 8. However, against Switzerland’s 3 Gold medals, Turkey won only 1. Unsurprisingly, Turkey did very well in the national sport wrestling, winning 1 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze. Switzerland’s golden medals in mountain biking, cycling and rowing can be attributed to its population’s love of nature.
