NEWSLETTER OF ASSOCIATION SUISSE TURQUIE
APRIL 2016
On the 23rd of this month, we celebrate Children’s Day, a day that Ataturk gifted to children in Turkey and in the World. Those of us who have grown up in Turkey fondly remember the wonderful festivities with the beautiful costumes, parades, bands, gymnastics, and folkloric dances. Typically, the students and teachers of each school would walk to the nearby stadium in a procession, headed by the school band and cheered on by flag waving, clapping parents and other observers. Inside the stadium, speeches, dances and other activities for children would take place. Along with all of the fun, there was always a semi-seriousness tone in the the event, in reference to the importance of that date which also celebrated the opening of the first Turkish parliament.
Upon arriving to Geneva, I was very impressed by the very first “Fête des Ecoles” that I saw, which is celebrated towards the end of the school year in June. It reminded me of my childhood in Turkey and of the April 23rd Children’s Day. In the Fête des Ecoles in Geneva, the children in primary school from ages 5 to 9 spend a good deal of time preparing head decorations or semi-costumes which are then displayed during the procession of all the schools through rue du Marché and Corraterie, accompanied by the Bands. Like during Children’s Day in Turkey, the children in the Fête des Ecoles parade are cheered on by their parents. (But even if you are not a parent, it is definitely a worthwhile sight!) Their destination is Park des Bastions, of which the doors close upon the entry of the last school and children find a Wonderland, with an amusement park where they can go on as many rides as they can, with a pure, unadultered pleasure.
Apparently in Lausanne Fête des Ecoles is also called Fête du Bois and has been celebrated since the 19th century: http://www.lausanne.ch/thematiques/scolarite-lausanne/seps/prestations/fetes-scolaires.html
We are very happy in the share of this attention to and thought about our children. Our Association is also organising a Children’s Day on the 23rd of which more details are below.
We wish all of you a very Happy Children’s Day!!

Turkey to host the first World Humanitarian Summit – 23-24 May
Istanbul Congress Center and Lutfi Kirdar Congress Center, Harbiye, Istanbul
This first ever conference is being organized at the request of Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary-General, whose very own refugee experience as a child during the Korean War renders him a genuine leader on this very poignant topic.
The choice of Istanbul, Turkey for this first event is very meaningful. Turkey has become the biggest refugee-hosting nation in the World with 3 million refugees. Turkey is also the world’s « most generous » humanitarian donor when the ratio of official humanitarian assistance to national income is taken into consideration.
