EKİM 2017

NEWSLETTER OF ASSOCIATION SUISSE TURQUIE

EKİM 2017

We are living in a fascinating period for archaeology.  Every year, excavations are conducted all around the world and recent finds range from a 3000-year-old wooden toe (believed to be a prosthesis) discovered by Swiss archaeologists in Egypt, to mosaics in Perge and even lost cities in Poland, China, and Iraq discovered thanks to new aerial picture technologies.

The topic of archaeology also brings us to the subject of antiquities and to the affair of Roman sarcophagus which was on exhibition for two months in Geneva.  Called the “Herculean” sarcophagus, it depicts 12 labours of Hercules and indeed, weighs a herculean 3 tonnes. It was estimated to be sculpted in the 2nd century in the region that is today Afyonkarahisar. It was unearthed in Perge during an unauthorised excavation and was detected in Geneva in 2010 by customs officers. After a six-year lengthy legal procedure, it has been returned to Turkey last month. Those of you who missed the exhibition in Geneva, can now appreciate it in Antalya museum.

We wish you a lovely autumn and to our Turkish friends a very happy October 29 Republic Day!
