AĞUSTOS 2017

NEWSLETTER OF ASSOCIATION SUISSE TURQUIE

AĞUSTOS 2017

It wouldn’t be too wrong to call August the “festival month”: everywhere around the world, from Geneva, to Gstaad, to Edinburgh, to Bodrum, to Kyoto.. there are plenty of festivals with something for everyone. You will find information on some of these events in the next sections.

As for September, in anticipation of our visit to Christie’s in Geneva, we would like to give you a small introduction to this celebrate auction house. Founded in London in 1766 by James Christie, Christie’s is today the biggest auction house in the world, conducting business in 46 countries and has 10 salerooms. In 2014 it made a record sale of $8.4bn.

Christie’s Geneva office is located in the Old Town (Vieille Ville), in a 16th century building once used as a dormitory for monks of St. Peter’s Cathedral. The firm’s first ever auction in Geneva took place in June, 1968. Nowadays the auctions are organized twice a year, in May and in November and the focus, in line with Geneva’s cultural heritage, is on jewellery and watches.

We hope to see many of you at our Christie’s event! In the meantime enjoy the festival month of August!

Exhibition: “Visage de l’Orient” (Faces of Orient), Until October 29

Crans Montana

This exhibition highlights an impressive series of popular images from Islamic countries. Selected from the extraordinary collection brought together by ethnologists Pierre and Micheline Centlivres-Demont, these inexpensive pictures, sold in the souks of the Middle East and neighbouring countries – from Morocco to Muslim India – show the East not exactly as it is but as it would like to be seen.Lasting for four months, the exhibition will be accompanied by occasional events in the hall on the ground floor, including debates about Islam, photo reportages, events involving contemporary artists, concerts, shows, and screenings, all of which will be linked to the theme of the exhibition.
