NEWSLETTER OF ASSOCIATION SUISSE TURQUIE
NİSAN 2017
The love of water is something that both Turkish and Swiss people share. Although there are fewer of them now, the beaches and beach clubs in Istanbul were in the past regularly enjoyed by many people living in the city, just as the beaches in Geneva, Nyon, Lausanne are enjoyed today by many people living in the region. The sound of the old Istanbul vapur horns which fill the air and the streets is reminiscent of the CGN’s horn, the belle epoque boat that departs every day from Geneva.
There is so much to write about the culture of living by the water, and we will likely explore this topic further in future editions of our newsletter. In this edition, however, we wanted to tell you more about the houses which sit right on the banks of the Bosphorus in Istanbul. These houses are called “Yalı” and the name is derived from the verb “yalamak” meaning to lick. These houses–if they are authentic Yalıs–have zero distance to the water, as if they were lips touching the Bosphorus. Some of the upper floors are constructed so that they are even situated physically above the water. Most of these houses were built in late 18th early 19th centuries.
According to Bedük’s article (http://www.biristanbulhayali.com/uskudarin-27-tarihi-yalisi in Turkish … but there is always google translate!) there are 366 of these Yalıs on the Bosphorus, although only 89 of them have remained authentic and faithful to their original architectural characteristics. The article looks in detail at those in Üsküdar. We will let you explore the article at your leisure.
We wish you a lovely spring and to all our members’ little girls and boys a very Happy April 23 Childrens Day!
