EKİM 2020
NEWSLETTER OF ASSOCIATION SUISSE TURQUIE
No 28
We’ve reached the month of October which is usually full of activities. Alas, this year due to the exceptional circumstances of the global pandemic, many events are on hold or cancelled, including our annual Republic Day Ball. In the meantime, October school holidays are fast approaching and we wanted to give you a little more cheerful news and tips in this edition.
First of all, did you know that October holidays are known in Geneva and in parts of Vaud as “Vacances de Patates” (potato holidays)? The reason is, in the past and before the Calvinist reforms, the origin of the holiday in October was the religious celebration of All Saints (Toussaint). The period was coinciding also with the harvest of potatoes, and the children were using this time to help their parents in the fields.
Since the reform, Geneva does not celebrate Toussaint, because Calvinism (like in many forms of Protestantism) does not worship humans even if they are Saints. Yet the October holiday for the schools continued and became to be known as “Vacances de Patates” in the region. Today, even though because of the climate changes potatoes are harvested much earlier, and many kids do not have parents with fields any more, the name of the holiday remained.
So, how to keep the kids busy during this October holiday as the travel options and activities are much more restraint?
Musee d’Art et Histoire organises many activities for children around the theme of Circus and they are free. You must register through their website. See in the link the programme.
The website Loisirs has gathered many other activities that can be of interest, from playing with giant Legos to getting to know Dracula better…
Even though we won’t be able to get together on the occasion, we already wish our Turkish members Happy Republic Day!

In the 48th Istanbul Music Festival, the emphasis is on the theme “The Enlightened World of Beethoven”, though it is much more than just a celebration of the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven.
Originally scheduled for June 2020, the summer fest had to be cancelled. A new programme of 18 concerts has been specially filmed and painstakingly recorded at historical locations in Istanbul (and elsewhere), for a month’s streaming online. Most concerts come with a nominal TL20 fee, though some are free.
